SUSTAINABILITY SPECIAL

Adidas x Parley is the first sneaker in the world to use innovative technologies to create high-performance products using Parley Ocean Plastic®

adidas_parley_00002To celebrate World Oceans Day, Adidas and Parley for the Oceans launched a limited edition range of the iconic running shoe presented in 2015 during the Parley Talks “Oceans. Climate. Life” event, which took place at the United Nations General Assembly Hall, in New York. The Adidas and Parley project involves the recovery and recycling of plastic that has been discarded into the oceans, to produce technical materials that can be used for high-performance products, taking advantage of 3D-printing technology. In fact, this sneaker is the first in a series of products that Adidas can now make using Parley Ocean Plastic®. The materials are collected along the coast of the Maldives and also use illegal, deep-sea fishing nets that have been recovered from Sea Shepherd, a partner of Parley for the Oceans. The shoes have been created using latest-generation Adidas technology: Adidas Tailored Fibre Technology, an innovative production technique that allows for the creation of exclusive designs, tailored to the personal needs of each athlete. A supporter of the initiative is football legend and Real Madrid trainer, Zinedine Zidane, who declared:

“This partnership between Adidas and Parley is really exciting and I personally feel really close to this project, which uses waste that is harmful to our planet to create something incredible.”

In the second half of 2016, one of the most important Adidas footwear ranges will be integrating Parley Ocean Plastic® into its designs, becoming the first eco-sustainable, mass-produced footwear range.
